Ease and convenience… New concrete stairs enhance accessibility through a steep Northern Beaches backyard.

As part of the build of a new pool at the rear of house on the Northern Beaches (Manly Vale), the old stairs were demolished in preparation for us to build new concrete stairs.

The original stairs comprised 50 small steps. They were in poor condition and made access from the top of the property to the backyard difficult and cumbersome.

In preparation for the demolition of the old stairs, a temporary set of scaffolding stairs was installed so we were able to continue working on the new pool build.

The first step was to demolish the original stairs. This was completed by an external contractor employed by the builder.

With the site cleared, we could begin construction of the new concrete stairs.

With the old stairs and decades of overgrowth removed, we now had a clear view of the land, which revealed large sandstone boulders and rock shelves beneath.

We suggested to the builder and site engineer that, instead of the stairs navigating around the rock, suspended from the ground, we use the rock to our favour. With these changes, we could change the orientation of the stairs so, instead of having three staggered landings, we would only need one halfway down. Not only did this reduce the number of stairs but the staircase would take up less of the backyard which could be used for landscaping and function.

Everyone, including the owners, were onboard.

Additionally, the new stairs are now 1200mm wide, instead of 700mm. This would make the stairs to traverse, particularly when carrying things from the house to the pool and entertaining area.
