A partially suspended slab for a home extension in Lane Cove.
Situated on a bushland block at the end of a cul-de-sac, this Lane Cove project involved the construction of a substantial concrete slab extension to an existing residence.
Due to the sloping nature of the site, the concrete structure incorporates both a slab on ground and a suspended slab section.
The suspended section extends approximately 4.5 metres above the natural ground level and has been engineered to support a significant cantilevered balcony.
Once completed, the suspended slab will support a substantial new extension overlooking the surrounding bushland. Storage areas will be constructed beneath the suspended section, maximising the usable space on the site while taking advantage of the elevated design.

Refining the design for long-term strength.
During the planning stage, we identified that the original engineering design may not have provided sufficient capacity to support the proposed structure.
After discussions with the builder and project engineer, the slab design was reviewed and upgraded and the project was able to proceed.
The slab thickness was increased from 160mm to 220mm, and the reinforcement was significantly enhanced, changing from two layers of XL92 mesh to a double layer of N16 reinforcement.
These modifications ensure the structure can safely support the loads associated with the three-metre cantilevered suspended balcony.

A concrete slab that follows the contours of the site.
One of the most impressive aspects of this project is the way the suspended slab integrates with the natural contours of the site. While part of the extension is supported by a conventional slab on ground, the suspended section allows the structure to extend over the sloping landscape without the need for excessive excavation or retaining works.
As part of our scope, we also constructed a suspended concrete staircase that will provide access between the new extension and the garden below.
We will return later in the project to complete the driveway and garage areas once construction of the upper levels has been finalised.
To assist the builders who now commence work on the addition, we also left our safety scaffolding in place, giving them a safe working platform during construction. When we return to complete the garage beneath the suspended slab and construct the driveway, we will remove the scaffolding.
Stay tuned for further updates as this project continues to take shape.
